Treasure Hunting

I have a new found love for Goodwill/Thrift stores.  I'm not sure why.  Maybe it's because I'm often successful at finding something that I think is really great. Something someone just cast off.  Maybe it's the thrill of the hunt!

It's like treasure hunting!

This week we did just that.  Here are a couple of things we found.  The first is a dress that Emma picked out that I agreed was pretty cute.  The best part about it?  It was 2.49.

We found a couple other things and then this caught my eye.

It's a farm scene and it has the word Fruhling at the bottom.  I didn't know what it meant but something about it intrigued me.

I googled it.  Fruhling in German means....Spring.  :)  Perfect.

Cory thought it was pretty cool too.  It even has a little hook on the back so I can hang it on one of our new walls when the house is finished.

Happy almost Spring!

Old Stuff ~part one~

I like old stuff.

Antique, vintage, sentimental, etc.

I know that once this house gets finished, and I  finally feel like I'm settled enough to decorate, then I will have a mixture of new and old and it's gonna be JUST right.

So here is part one of "Old Stuff".

The Grandfather clock from Germany.
This was given to us by Cory's grandfather (fitting) who found this beauty in Germany while stationed there for the Army.
This clock is actually just one of dozens of clocks that he found in old barns, basements, and bartered with the German folk to purchase.  Then he shipped them all over to the US.
Pretty cool.
It has amazing detail.

I love the mahogany color.

Meet Myrtle.

Ain't she a beut?  That's real person hair too by the way.  This porcelain dolly was my great-grandmothers.  I never met her.  She was my mom's dad's mother.  And her name was Myrtle.  So I named the doll after her.  Make sense?  But now she belongs to me.  Actually I've had her since I was a little girl but she will someday belong to Emma.  Emma is more than ready to take ownership but she's just gonna have to wait just a little longer. :)

So dainty.

This next one is more vintagy.  In fact it's not really a decoration.  Unless you consider it finger decoration.

This is a ring that used to belong to my mom.  Can you tell it's from the 70s?  I don't even think she knows that I have it and I've had it a long time.  I wore it all day today and felt all vintagy like.  :)

And here is a REALLY olllld knick knack I guess you could say.

My baby shoe.

It used to be a black patent leather shoe that my G.C. kept.  She had it dipped in ceramic and gave one to me and the other to my mom.

Most of these things were given to us and it has struck me how blessed my husband and I are to have such an incredible heritage.

I have some other old stuff but that's for another time.

Falalalala...la.la.la.la!

My ragamuffin crew and I picked out our Christmas tree this afternoon.  I really like going to this place every year.  It's a family-owned business and they come down from Asheville with their trees.  They are always very friendly and the customer service is great.  The kids always like the HUGE snowman and the free candy canes.  :)

The halls are decked and the kids helped so that means damage control is in order but they had fun.  Emma enjoyed bossing everyone decorating.  She really gets into it.  Cody is more patient with her than I would be and Beau made a mess and pulled more ornaments off the tree than he helped put on.

Merry Christmas!!

A place for everything

Can we say eyesore?  Um, yes.  Yes we can.

This has been a bother.  A big fat eyesore right in the corner of our living room.  I've been thinking about what to do with this stuff for a few weeks now.  Ok, ever since school started actually.  I finally had time to shop today.  So this afternoon I set out to see what I could do about this ugly mess.  One trip to Marshall's (I love Marshall's!), and one trip to Target, plus an hour rearranging and organizing.  I feel much better now.

Much, much better.  And yes those are glorified stickers on my wall.  I think they add a little something special. ;)
